For Valentine’s Day this year (2011), Deborah and I were looking for a place that was not too fancy, not too casual, not too loud, and preferable somewhere without screaming kids. We found everything we wanted at Indiana’s oldest bar….the Slippery Noodle Inn! I hadn’t been to the Slippery Noodle in years and Deborah had never been, so it seemed we’d found the perfect combination for our special Valentine’s Dinner.
We made dinner reservations for 7:30 so we could be done with dinner before the bands started, which turned out to be a good choice. Getting there a little early gets you a quiet dinner in a great atmosphere. If you wait until 8:30 or later, the place really starts hopping, the volume increases, and the servers get much busier.
Out dinner choice tonight was the Valentine’s Day Dinner Special! A nice step above typical bar-fare, but still nothing too fancy. Just what we were in the mood for. Since it wasn’t too busy at 7:30, our server was very attentive and got our order in right away.
Service started with a delicious bowl of French Onion Soup, served with a French baguette. The soup was to-die-for….piping hot and loaded with melted cheese. The baguette would have been better if it had been warmed up, but overall, a nice way to start our meal.
The main course was Filet Oscar, filet mignon medallion’s with lump crabmeat and bearnaise sauce, asparagus and roasted red potatoes.
I ordered my steak medium-well and Deborah ordered her’s medium. Both of us felt that our steaks were a smidgen undercooked, though not enough to bother us or complain about. I didn’t think my meat was quite as tender as it could have been, but the combination of the lump crabmeat with bearnaise sauce was a fabulous blend of flavors, and we enjoyed ever morsel!
Our side dishes of asparagus and roasted red-peppers were nothing to write home to momma about, but they were fine.
We each finished our meal with a hearty slice of Triple Chocolate Obsession Cake, which was the exclamation point of dinner! Let me tell you, it was worth driving downtown just for this cake!!! Three layers of different kinds of chocolate, on a chocolate crust, chocolate icing with chocolate chips in it, and a chocolate syrup drissled over the top!! I’m betting Dr. Justus would beat me with a stick for this indulgement.
Deborah and I both felt that dinner could have been served hotter. Maybe it took awhile to get it from the kitchen to the table, but other than the soup, it just wasn’t as steamy hot as I like my meal. Later we heard people at the next table make the same complaint to our server.
Our bill (including a couple drinks) came to just under $50, which seemed to be pretty fair for the meal we received, and was right on target for our evening budget.
The Slippery Noodle Inn has free secure parking right next to the building, which is very nice. On the night we went, there was a $5.00 cover-charge for each of us.
Overall, our experience at the “The Noodle” was very enjoyable, and just what we were looking for. I would absolutely recommend this place!
